for Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Practices

Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention
Cristy Pacheco, Governor Gary Locke, Jana and Reto Filli.

When the Washington State Department of Ecology seeks nominations for its Governor's Award, it looks for businesses that are setting high standards in pollution prevention and sustainable practices.

Three goals of the DOE are to prevent pollution, clean up pollution, and support sustainable communities and natural resource. It defines sustainable as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

Caring for the environment has long been important to Reto and Jana Filli — even before they bought Circle & Square, in 1988. When they built their new facility, it was state-of-the-art in environmental controls, as well as vehicle service.

Circle & Square:
• Recycles used antifreeze, oils and lubricants
• Crushes and recycles oil filters
• Provides secondary containment for all hazardous wastes
• Installed tanks designed to catch degreasing and cleaning residues
• Uses all of the mandated equipment for environmentally-sound automotive repair and maintenance
• Offers regularly-scheduled Right-to-Know training for employees
• Carries liability insurance covering safe handling, use, storage, shipping and disposal of hazardous cleaners, chemicals and lubricants
• Recycles all packing materials, cardboard, paper and toner cartridges
• Properly disposes regulated and documented waste fluids and chemicals
• Properly handles and manages asbestos
• Registers hundreds of chemicals with the state
• Regularly tests,
by certified technicians, storage tanks for leakage
• Purchases special safety reclaiming and storage equipment
• Follows regulatory compliance with EPA small waste generator's license
• Properly removes mufflers, tailpipes, catalytic converters and batteries
